Carla Newstead won the award for 2015 Western Sydney Institute (WSI) VET in Schools Student of the Year.
St Patrick’s Marist College, Dundas Year 12 student, Carla Newstead won the award for 2015 Western Sydney Institute (WSI) VET in Schools Student of the Year. The regional finals were held at Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday 18 June.
Carla was nominated for the award for her studies in Retail Services through TAFE and work at KFC.
Carla was one of 36 students in the six categories to be selected as a finalist for the awards. She was commended by her workplace and the selection panel for her energetic nature, motivation towards work and passion for the food and retail industries.
Judges also credited Carla for the volunteer work she has undertaken within the College at various open days, walkathons and for charitable organisations such as the Cardinal Freeman Centre.
Carla was one of 36 students in the six categories to be selected as a finalist for the awards.
Carla said she is looking forward to studying nutrition at university in 2016, taking up her UWS scholarship and interested in gaining a Masters in the field.
‘I’m hoping to work for the CSIRO or a large company within the food industry,’ Carla said.‘I feel honoured to have even been considered for this award and feel even more focused on my career now.’
Principal Angela Haysaid the school community was very proud of Carla's accomplishments.
‘Carla has worked hard, shown great enthusiasm and initiative in the workplace,’ Angela said. ‘Studying a VET subject is a great way to work towards and in some cases achieve an industry standard qualification, giving our students a head start in their future careers.’
Carla will now represent the region as she progresses to the NSW awards which will be held in September.
